Did you happen to become a Vanguard subscriber at launch, only to leave the game? Have you been wondering what life's been like on Telon since launch? You might find that investigating your account page would be worthwhile, as chances are, your account could be flagged to currently play Vanguard: Saga of Heroes for free!

Starting yesterday, people who previously signed up for the email newsletter received a new email stating that canceled Vanguard accounts will be going through the process of becoming flagged free from now until July 31. While the Isle of Dawn trial is nearing its release, those who work on Vanguard cannot wait for anyone with an inactive account to see how many improvements have been made to the game.

New quests and content are currently in the game, along with many different mounts to obtain as well as constant updates in code to fix 'hitching' and other performance issues. This is not the Vanguard it was at launch. It's free, so try it out. You might be pleasantly suprised!

The official word can be found here and if you need to digitally reinstall the game, the installer can be downloaded from here.

I look forward to meeting you in Telon!

Recently I had a chance to chat with a Vanguard player who was not only not ashamed of playing a game whose name makes many of us cringe, but who's actually really excited and involved in the community that she shares. Many of you may find her enthusiasm misplaced. The rest of us understand finding an MMO home that few relate to! It is to those people I say: "Embrace a fellow crazy person! She's here to stay!"

Vendolyn plays solely on the Seradon server, though she freely admits she has alt-itis. She plays a different character depending on what she's looking to do in game. Grouping and soloing bring out her different characters, and therefore different appeals for her, though she notes that Vanguard's skill system does not require this for succeeding in the world, it's just a personal preference. This was a shock to me because I'd always heard (and believed without merit apparently) that Vanguard was looking for the "hard core" player who would have to group to succeed. Apparently this was true back at the beginning of the design cycle and while it turned many players away from paying more attention to the game as development progressed, it quickly became clear to the designers that such a system was not being embraced well throughout the community. If only that were their only mistake. So I asked how the game responded now, to such accusations. "I don't think it's overly difficult. I played EQ for 6 or 7 years. That was hard! Vanguard's difficulty, I'd rate slightly above EQ2. It's still super easy to level and there's so much content that you can solo to 50 if you chose. You can also choose to level to 50 in one of the other spheres without killing anything. There are also nice quest lines that offer pretty good rewards set at group-level difficulty."

On May 13th Allakhazam posted an interview conducted with Thom Terrazas, a Producer on the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes team. In this interview Thom discussed the changes that have been made to the performance of Vanguard. He stated that the changes to the game’s optimization are night and day compared to the launch product, going so far as to say “I’ll even flag your account for free for a period of time if you want to go in and prove me wrong.” I decided that I’d take Thom up on this offer.

My first task was to contact SOE to see if indeed this claim would be backed up. I submitted a ticket to customer service, citing the article on Allakhazam and what Mr. Terrazas had said. Within a few hours I received an update to my ticket saying that customer service would indeed honor Thom’s word and grant me a 3 day flag to play the game again. After a quick email back confirming my Station account info I was granted my access.

We recently had an opportunity to chat with Thom Terrazas about the state of Vanguard, the improvements made, and still being made, and his own personal view of how things are going...

Allakhazam: Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us! To start off, would you please give us your name, position on the Vanguard team, and some background information?

Thom:
My name is Thom Terrazas, Producer on the Vanguard team. For SOE, I began working as a Project Manager (PM) and functioning as a liaison between SOE and Sigil Games from October 2006 to May 2007. After the launch of Vanguard in January 2007, I continued on as the PM for SOE and joined the team full time in May 2007 when SOE acquired the assets of Sigil Games Online and more importantly, Vanguard and the awesome team working on the game. In October of 2007, I took over as Producer and continue to manage both Vanguard and PlanetSide.

Julie "Ellyra" Burness, Vanguard Community Rep at SOE, has let us know that beginning Tuesday, May 13, 2008, players will be offered two opportunities for server transfers for both new and existing Vanguard players!

"Originally, we had offered one transfer per character created before the server merges, but due to a large amount of old friends coming back to the game, we’ve decided to do away with all those rules, and open up the server transfers to anyone – regardless of their creation date or prior move history.

We’re hoping this opportunity will let people come back to the game, and easily find a home on a server where their friends are playing."

Round one will start on May 13th, and round two will become at some point in the following week. According to Julie, "Requesting a move is simple, and only requires logging into the game and using the /petition command.  Players will need to include the names of all the characters on their account they would like to have moved, along with the server they would like to be transferred to." She also pointed out some things to keep in mind when looking to transfer:

  • Players cannot transfers to the Sartok (PvP) server, but are free to move to any other server.
  • All broker items should be packed up before the move, tombstones and house items collected.  Players do not need to tear down their homes.

So if you've ever wanted to be on a different server, now is the time! Mark your calendars and pack your moving boxes for the big day!
